Hello All Stars.
Welcome to your second judging and elimination process.
This week you have to choose a nature elements and reflect it into your photo. Let's see how you girls did this week.
EARTH
ANGELA
Ayu: When I saw that the first categories that filled up were Earth and Water, I was like "Oh god, we're just going to get 'Good 2.0'" with pictures upon pictures of girls smiling outside - Which is pretty much what we got this week. Luckily, you do not fit into that category. Because while you're sitting in nature, you've turned it away from photo at a picnic, into a fashion model. The earthy tones throughout the picture are to die for, and you've done amazing to stand out this week.
Emmy: I'm conflicted on this photo. While I really love the setting, I feel like the body language is a tad stiff. I'm choosing to believe that that's because there's a chill in the air, as so often happens towards the end of autumn. I think I would have liked this better with a less flat background, but other than that I think it's a very strong submission.
Yoona: This is just simply gorgeous. I love everything about this photo. From the setting to the styling, everything just breathtaking. Great job, Angela
Jensen: you have an unfair advantage........One - you're perfect........Two - you know absolutely everything I love because you were on my team <3 I cannot even express how MUCH I love everything about this picture
HILARY
Ayu: Either this is incredibly bad quality, or you have the worst skin in Hollywood. The horrendous quality aside, this particular pose makes you look short. We're in the early stages, and you're up against 13 other all-stars. You need to make a good impression on us, not one like this.
Emmy: Earth is one of the hardest categories, because it's very easy to just go with a simple outdoors shot and not really interact with the element as much. It's really easy to play it safe here, and that's why it's a bit of a disappointment when someone does. I think it's a gorgeous shot of you, the smile is engaging and the dress is beautiful, but the quality and the simplicity detract from it a bit for me.
Yoona: Yeah. The first thing that came to my mind was the quality as well. Overall, I think this is very average. I love the dress and the setting. I think if you give a different and high fashion pose, it would be much stronger.
Jensen: I'm on the fence.......beautiful picture but safe
LAURA
Ayu: Yeah, don't use photos you have used before - That's actually not allowed. Using photos from the same set is allowed, but make sure they're not too noticeably from the same bunch. Apart from your killer face as always, there's nothing here that particularly excites me. I know you won by flying under the radar, but you're up against the best of the best here. Try to impress!
Emmy: I think this is a decent interaction with the theme, more than just "Oh look, I'm modelling, and I just happen to be outdoors, so it's Earth!", but not by enough to make me thrilled by it. I think the facial expression is really what redeems this and makes it captivating - which is interesting because I usually despise light-eyed blondes. So I'd hesitate to say that this is great, but I think it's got some very strong points.
Yoona: You have a very strong portfolio. So when you were under-performed, it shown. This photo has to be my second least favorite (after the Sexy Women's Magazine). Your face is gorgeous but I don't think the overall angle of this photo is good. I want to see the setting more.
Jensen: I love your modeling and thats how you won and its evident here
MIA
Ayu: I like short hair on you - At least better than the pigtails. Apart from looking absolutely gorgeous, there's nothing particular exciting or noteworthy here. It's just safe. It's just a pretty hipster girl posing for a picture in a park, really.
Emmy: I really love the lighting here, and the facial expression is positively bewitching. I agree that it doesn't really have a significant "WOW!" factor, but I think it's a really strong submission nonetheless. Playing it safe isn't always a bad thing, especially since I know you're capable of greatness down the road.
Yoona: You look gorgeous. And that haircut looked so good on you. And I like the dress. Overall, it's a little bit safe for me especially in term of the theme execution. I want to see more from you.
Jensen: I'm. ......not.......loving this at all. It's like a yearbook photo
SOFIA
Ayu: I love the earthy brown tone all through this. I love the positioning of the body, the legs. I love the face. But I don't like the way this is edited. From the repeating beans (Most obvious in the bottom left corner), to the way your head almost looks decapitated. There also seems to be a quality issue too!
Emmy: I definitely feel your pain with the quality thing. It sucks when you have a great theme-fitting photo that's a bit grainy, because you have to wonder whether you'll lose more points for missing the theme or for the quality. Frankly I always say go for theme connection over quality (even though I totally didn't do that this week and should have gone with the grainy Earth photo I had but I had a headache and it was like 2 am SO SUE ME), and I think it'll pay off for you in this case. Now I'm going to hypocritically make a note about the quality because I'm a judge and can do that. Obvious photo edits are obvious, and that's a bit of a detraction, though I'm more inclined to give it a pass if you found the image as opposed to creating it. So my advice is either... "create better next time" or "don't be afraid to alter someone else's photoshop mistakes", depending on how that all went down. But anyway I love the pose here, and the facial expression is very sublime. Good work this week!
Yoona: Those things are Coffee Beans? I thought those are some kind of Colombian Sands or something like that. I think this shot is gorgeous. Really unique. But yeah.. Quality.. Well, you're right. Screw It. If you think, it was worth it, then just go with it. I think this is worth it.
Jensen: even on my phone i can see the bean issue bottom left corner......but otherwise.....this is such a Gisele kind of photo which will earn you major points in my ranks
WIND
CHRISTINA
Ayu: Ah, Christina. Thank you. I was beginning to feel let down. There's a mixture of fire and wind. The wind in your dress, and then the fire in the colours, and the sexy smoulder in your eyes. I think you could have stood out even more though, if you did indeed choose fire, rather than wind. You're definitely once again in the top of the pack this week.
Emmy: The color seems a tad washed out, but that's really the only quibble I have. I really like the effect with the dress (and it reminds me of the shot I could totally have used for this if I'd been able to find the right version. DARNIT!) and the pose is all kinds of shamazing. Great work this week!
Yoona: Gorgeous. I love this. Your styling is so gorgeous and the way the dress flow was just so beautiful to me. I love it. I think you look so focus here. Great job, Christina. Two strong weeks in a row.
Jensen: gorgeous as always
EMMA
Ayu: The wind is in your hair, Emma, but your face is caught in the headlights. I'm going to be blunt. I don't like it. It looks a bit low budget, and a bit greasy, and not in the fun way. Then again, it could just be the hair over the face that's giving me that impression.
Emmy: Ayu, your familiarity with things that are low-budget and greasy never ceases to shock and horrify me. Now, as for the photo, I think it's a great way of demonstrating the concept, but in a shot like this where the face is such a focal point, expression is everything. I think this one's a bit too make-uppy and vacant to really sell the photo for me, but I think it's creative and interesting, and an excellent counterpoint to some of the other fare we've seen from you. Good work!
Yoona: I really like this. There's something about this photo that make it look so artistry and gorgeous. Your expression is good and I love the way the hair flow to the side. I think this would be even better in Black & White
Jensen: yikes did they take your picture at the scene of your murder? At least you're a beautiful corpse
PALOMA
Ayu: Love. I absolutely the concept. I mean, the dove was pretty badly photoshopped in (Not saying by you), but the concept is amazing. To make it all better, your face, body, they're all on point. Apart from that bad photoshopping job, and an issue with quality, I like this.
Emmy: The quality's definitely an issue, but I like where you're going with this. I think it's artistic and a really neat take on the theme. Something in the hips strikes me as a tad off, but other than that I think it's really great.
Yoona: Wow... Just stunning. Very creative. I love this. That's it.
Jensen: creative and beautiful and spunky......thats Paloma
SHAILENE
Ayu: I like the flowing action of the cape, but that's really about it. It's just looking like a pretty girl taking a picture at the beach. The face is great, though!
Emmy: I definitely get a good wind vibe, certainly more than if you'd, let's say, been riding on a lame horse. I think the black and white definitely adds a crispness to it, and that's a real plus with the wind category, since too much color can detract from the effect. One note I'd say is that I'd like this a lot more if you'd cropped out the trees on the left - they don't add much to the image and draw the focus away from you. Still, love the pose, and the facial expression is good, but a bit squinty for my tastes. Definitely not bad, though.
Yoona: I like this Shai. The concept is very good and the angle is gorgeous. I wish we could 'see' the wind more in your photo. But overall, I think this is very solid.
Jensen: I can't wait to see this on my computer because it looks amazing here
FIRE
KIM
Ayu: You saw no one chose fire, and you went with that. I like that. It's a great way to stand out and be memorable. The best part is that this picture is absolutely flawless for the theme - Literally and metaphorically. I just wish there was a bit more fire in the eyes, and that it came in a bigger size.
Emmy: I think this is a really interesting execution. Fire is one of the harder elements to portray, and I think you're doing a decent job of pulling it off. NOT a fan of the facial expression, but everything else comes together really nicely here.
Yoona: The expression was a little bit stiff for me but other than that, I think you nailed it. Love the dress and the concept is great. Solid week from you. Great job, Kim.
Jensen: agree with Yoona. ......expression off....picture awesome
WATER
ANNA
Ayu: I know you said you're not really that creative, but this is only a very slight step up from last week. The thing is, if you want to stick around, you need to be creative. You need to find a way to stand out from the pack. For example, a good way to have taken this photoshoot would be to do a bit of research into what the elements actually represent, and think of that when looking for a picture - It's a good way to stand out from the pack, and leave an impression on us judges. I mean, there are 14 of you, you want us to remember you.
Emmy: For starters, that image tag. I know it says "Do not remove" but there are two ways around that. Firstly, you can just click and drag the image into a Google Images tab and it should help you to find a non-tagged version (I tried it with this exact photo and it does work). The second is to just go ahead and remove it because lesbihonest, Anna Kendrick is probably not ever going to show up here and get in your face about copyright violation. (But on the off chance that she does, I just wanna say: Hi Anna Kendrick! Big fan! Say, if it's not too much trouble, could I get a photo of you holding a piece of paper saying that I'm better than Ayumi?)
I think this is a pretty interesting take on your element. I'm not really feeling the face, but I love the energy and the general vibe you've got going here.
Yoona: I like this. It's very calm-ish and the setting is really beautiful. And I love the styling. I think you look great in this photo. Much better than last week. This week I can see your personality from this photo. Good job.
Jensen: this seems very candid. I'm not a fan
ANNE
Ayu: Anne, I like your face, but that's about it. The rest of it is so stiff, and that's definitely not what we want for water. You really need to find a way to stand out among the other 13 all-stars. I think that you could have done really great with fire, taking the romantic and passion angle. This, however, doesn't impress.
Emmy: Underwater modelling is always a big risk, and in this case I'm not sure it paid off. It comes across as a tad generic, but I do like the artistry and the effect. It's not bad, but there's not as much of a wow factor here as I was hoping for.
Yoona: I think the concept and idea is really good but there's something about the execution that left me wanting more. This isn't enough for me. But this photo isn't bad at all. I think you look beautiful here so that will help you a lot.
Jensen: I don't mind this so much. The modeling is pretty good.
IMOGEN
Ayu: Imogen. Thank you for taking this approach, I like that you've used some creativity, and that you went from a fashion approach. That being said, I really think a symbolic, emotional approach to water would have brought this photo to life. I know you can't change anything, but even just a slight bit of emotion in that stoic face would have made me love it.
Emmy: First I looked at the picture, couldn't figure out which element you chose, wtf'ed out loud, then read the description, then looked at the picture again, and wtf'ed silently. I'm really torn on this one, because on the one hand I really like that you were creative, and that you decided to wear water rather than just finding a picture of you next to a pond or something; on the other hand, if another contestant was wearing an Earth Day T-shirt, I'd feel like that's a cop out. I love the facial expression, and most of the pose, (That one arm, though. Ye gads!) but I'm trying to decide how I feel from a thematic standpoint. If there was more going on here to suggest "water" other than that water patterning shows up in the photo, I'd be in love with it. (Honestly, if you had recolored the wood in the background to be blue-ish? My number one. Instantly.) If you didn't have any other photos and chose this one out of desperation and were just completely making up that explanation to see if we'd buy it... I'd also be in love with it because that kind of blatantly craven behaviour is one of my favorite things in life. As it is, I'm choosing to like it quite a bit, but not love it.
Yoona: I like this. I think it's a very unique approach to the theme this week. And you look so gorgeous in this photo. I love your hairstyle. And the outfit is really eye-catching. I like this. Great job, Imogen.
Jensen: unlike Emmy.......my second WTF was still out loud. Beautiful face......boring expression......boring setting.....boring pose......sorry.....your description is good but your picture is not
JANET
Ayu: Ugh. That face is absolutely horrendous. There's no nice way of putting it. If you want to be our first black winner, we can't see this. Chop off the face, and it's a nice bathing suit picture, but generic water picture. But on the bright side, it's not Latoya's face.
Emmy: I like the pose, but I gotta agree. Janet's face is an acquired taste, and not one that's easy to find great photos of. That aside, it's a nice execution of the theme (if a tad safe) and a decent shot overall. Good work!
Yoona: Overall, I think this is very solid. I see you did way better than this. This kinda reminds me of your Nature shot. But the reject version one due to the expression. But we definitely going to see you again next week.
Jensen: not loving the face babe
